How to crochet a spiral granny square tutorial
Spiral granny square tutorial:
foundation chain and the first row
To start the spiral granny you will need yarn of four different colours and a crochet hook. I used Debbie Bliss «Baby cashmerino» yarn (125m/50gr) and a 3,5mm hook.
Foundation row: Using the first colour (in my case it's red, let's name it as A), ch2.
1-st row: continue with A. Insert the hook in the second ch from the hook and do 1 sc (single crochet), 1hdc (half double crochet) and 2 dc (double crochet). Make a big loop and remove the hook from the loop, we've done with the first colour in this row.
Take the second colour, let's name it as B. Join B with a sc (single crochet) in the same ch of foundation row, then 1hdc (half double crochet) and 2 dc (double crochet). Make a loop and remove the hook, we've finished with the second colour in the first row.
Take the third colour (let's name it as C) and repeat the same process as with B. After that use the fourth colour (let's name it as D) and repeate once again.

Spiral granny square tutorial: second row
We start the new row again with the first colour, colour A (red).
2-nd row: Using A make 2 dc in the next sc of the first row (it's colour B), 1 dc in the next hdc of the previous row, then 2 dc in the next dc and 1 dc in the last dc of the first row of colour B. Make a big loop and remove the hook from the loop.
Repeat the same pattern with colours B, C and D.

Now it's time to turn our work on the other side to check the quality of our crocheting and also to be double sure that we have no mistakes:

Our spiral granny square is ready!
Let's see how it looks like )
The size of my granny is 10,5cm x 10,5cm? And yours?

You know, crocheting my granny I became so involved that updated the pattern and made 2 additional rows. I wanted so much to finish it as a true granny square, with groups of 3 dc in ch-1 sp. In this case your spiral granny will be bigger. The size of my big spiral granny is 16cm x 16cm. More information on my project on Ravelry.
As you can see, I modifyed the 6-th row and made it nearly the same as 5-th. I added 7-th row with the groups of 3 dc as a classical granny square has. The idea of the 8-th row, the last one of the granny as also very similar as in the last row of it's smaller brother.
Let's take a look at two brother grannies:
I liked the big one a lot, so I made him a twin. I gave them the finishing touch with 2 rows of sc, because I have some further plans for them. I show you my new idea in the next tutorial. Here is just a small hint on what could it be:
Have a great time crocheting!
